Kathryn Eileen Gulla, 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on December 19, 2021 in Winter Springs, FL.
Born in Schenectady, NY, on March 23, 1935, Kay lived in many states during her childhood with her brother, Richard Fericy, and parents, Earl and Ida Fericy, as her father worked as a mason on various building projects.
Her family settled in New Jersey in her early teens. There she met the love of her life, Francis “Frank” Gulla, and wrote together a beautiful story of love, adventure, joy, family, and feistiness. Over the years, they had homes in Dunellen, Middlesex, Princeton, Marco and Long Beach Island, and Wilmington, fully enjoying the areas and friends from every chapter. Together, they also enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad.
Kay devoted her life to her family, always embracing the sharing of rich cultural experiences and moments of cherished traditions.
As a lifelong learner, Kathryn was a graduate of Middlesex County Community College, Thomas Edison University, and Rutgers University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree at 50 years old with studies in science and sociology. She continued with Graduate School coursework in Intercultural Communication. As a resident of Princeton and a non-matriculated student, she also sat in on classes at Princeton University and rarely missed the opportunity to be inspired by each graduating year’s commencement speaker.
She was employed as a lab technician at Smooth-On Corporation and Celanese Corporation, and as an administrative assistant at Bristol Myers Squibb. She volunteered at Somerville Medical Center when her children were young. In recent years, due to her love of horses and riding from her childhood in Texas, she volunteered at the Carousel Park & Equestrian Center in Wilmington, DE. She assisted with their equestrian therapy program for special needs children.
With her Frank being an avid car lover and collector, she enjoyed the many beautiful cars with which she was showered and adorned. For many years, she turned heads with a stunning, yellow and black, 1955 MG TD Roadster classic convertible, driving it everywhere.
She was a deeply spiritual woman, dedicated to her Catholic faith. She loved sewing, drawing & painting, jitterbugging, music from classical to country to choral to modern, theater & opera, reading, football, and captaining her beautiful sailboat, the “Plan B.” She was so funny, wise, and brave. She loved a good beer, scotch, or cabernet sauvignon and a great laugh. But mostly, she loved time with her beloved Frank and immediate and extended family and friends.
Kathryn had many plans. Even at 84 years old, she talked of getting her pilot’s license and living in Paris to walk along the Seine River wearing a great hat. May her kindness, loyalty, perseverance, impishness, and joie de vivre live on in all of us that she endeared.
She is predeceased by her husband, Francis Robert Gulla; her parents, Earl and Ida (Regetz) Fericy; brother, Richard Fericy; and daughter, Stephanie Suzanne Gazi. She is survived by her three children, Michael Francis Gulla and wife, Magda of Maitland, FL, Jacqueline Ann Decker and husband, Daniel of Yardley, PA, and Paul Earl Gulla of Hopedale, MA; nine grandchildren, Suzanne, Jonathan, Megan, Brittany, Robert, Laurel, Daisy, Joseph, and Nairon; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Stephen, Piper, Brixton, and Decker.
Viewing will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022, from 10-11am at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, Princeton, NJ. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am. Interment will be held privately.
