Friday, December 28, 2018Eli has always been a great adviser and friend. Like many of us in harmonic analysis, I benefited a lot from his work, writing, teaching and mentoring. His vision and dedication for the subject was simply amazing. It was often said that Eli has a great taste picking questions he'd like to understand, and I was always impressed about how Eli makes progress on difficult problems by "finding the right point of view". On top of that, Eli was just such a wonderful person: he was kind and gentle, caring and considerate, resourceful and articulate, and encouraging and supportive. He was genuinely interested in people around him, and he treated many colleagues, students and staffs as his treasured friends. Moreover, Eli was always ready to share his thoughts, both about mathematics and about life in general, often in some witty and imaginative ways. I owe a lot to Eli, both for his teaching and for the friendship that he extends. Carmen and I are both deeply saddened by his passing, but Eli will be dearly missed. Please accept our condolences.

Friday, December 28, 2018I am so sad at the passing of Eli Stein, who was my college roommate at the U of Chicago beginning in 1949. We later roomed together at Harvard, when he was at MIT in 1957-58. Eli gave me a copy of his first published paper, "The interpolation of linear operators," and I could understand none of it. I'm an anthropologist not a mathematician, but I have always thought of Eli as a truly good man. I believe I saw him last at the 40th reunion of our class at the College of the U of Chicago in 1991. I haven't been in close contact with him, but I shall miss him always. Bob LeVine

Tuesday, December 25, 2018I am deeply saddened by the loss of Professor Stein. I express my condolences to the whole family. I have been always inspired by many articles and books written by him. It is a big loss for Mathematics other than for the family of course. Giuseppe Di Fazio
