Friday, January 3, 2020I am very saddened to here of Tom's death. I also regret that I only learned of his death this morning, and hence, had not offered my note of condolence to the family earlier. Our annual holiday card was returned yesterday and I assumed Tom had retired from the NJDH. In seeking up to date contact information, I was shocked to find his obituary from nearly a year ago. Tom was an amazing individual; a caring physician and the best mentor one could ever hope for. He inspired me during my residency at the NJDH and encouraging me along the way, and was always present as a solid pillar of support. He was a brilliant individual, who always put others above himself. He will be greatly missed. Kathleen F. Gensheimer, MD, MPH Bath, Maine

Monday, December 9, 2019I am very saddened that Dr Zanna (Tom) has passed away! I met him at The NJ Department of Health, when he hired me to work with him in the Diabetes program. I knew him for many, many years and we were good friends as well as colleagues! He was the smartest person I have ever met and with whom I had the fortune to be able to work! He was so sweet, selfless and giving! He contributed so much to the welfare of those he served and will be sorely missed! I loved him! My condolences to Tom's family.

Saturday, March 16, 2019I am beyond saddened, having literally just learned last evening on Friday, March 15, of the passing of Dr. Zanna. I deeply apologize to his family, as I would have expressed my condolences immediately had I known. I was fortunate enough to work for Dr. Zanna for some time, as his secretary, in the Dept. of Health until I retired a few years ago. We had also at times kept in touch after that time as well. It was because of Dr. Zanna's unwavering kindness, calming presence and his personality in general that I looked forward to coming to work. His compassionate nature and true concern for others allowed me the ability to feel completely at ease in accepting his offer to come to him at any time should I need anything. I will forever treasure our talks, laughter, his generosity, and his advice, as Dr. Zanna, with his profoundly empathic and gentle soul, helped me through tremendously difficult times. I will forever have the utmost respect for this extraordinarily intelligent and true gentleman. I am enormously.grateful having even known someone of such moral and rare character. As I sit here, through tears I say thank you dearest Dr. Z...for being my friend. I will forever remember you. You will be missed.

Saturday, February 16, 2019Such a shock, I saw him a few weeks ago at a meeting. I knew Tom as a physician colleague on the DURB and working in public health, he was a warm friendly person and very concerned about people's welfare. He will be missed.

We lived in New Jersey for about 8 years and would get together with Tom regularly in Princeton and also Cherry Hill where we lived. He actually was our son Ryan’s godfather.
