Elsie May Hamilton was born on December 27, 1911 in Rose Hill, Mandeville, parish of Manchester, in the county of Middlesex, Jamaica (British West Indies) to Carolyn Parchment and Arthur Carpenter. Upon finishing her education, she trained to become a seamstress and lived in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1945, she left Jamaica to come to New York, NY. She continued working as a seamstress in the garment district of New York.
She married Aubrey J. Hamilton in October, 1949 while they both lived in Manhattan NY and later had two daughters. She worked as a salesperson in Alexander’s Department Store for many years. In 1972, she and her husband relocated to Groton, Connecticut. In 2003, they moved to New Jersey to be close to their daughter and joined St Paul Church.
Our mother was known as a great cook and hostess. She loved seeing a full table of food to be surrounded by family and friends. Elsie enjoyed chatting with family and friends about the latest gossip and fashion. She was an avid reader of the newspaper and enjoyed talking about current events.
She died peacefully on July 25, 2019.She is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, great granddaughter, nieces and cousins. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at St. Paul Church 216 Nassau Street, Princeton.
