Robert Toppmeyer, devoted son and brother, passed away on August 11, 2020. He was born on July 19, 1957 in Manhattan, New York.
He graduated from Herricks High School in New Hyde Park, NY after three years in 1974 to attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. At Wesleyan, he majored in Philosophy, graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After college, he learned French at the Sorbonne in Paris and then earned a Masters of Arts in Classics at the University of Pennsylvania. In high school, he taught himself German and in later years learned enough Italian to read The Divine Comedy. Throughout his life, he independently and ardently pursued his passion for literature, spanning poetry, drama, fiction, philosophy, religion, history, art history, politics, and nonfiction from ancient through modern times and often in the original language. Robert was a true intellectual who dwelt in the world of words.
Despite his love of classics, Robert ultimately decided to pursue a career in marketing and marketing research and became an accomplished businessman co-owning his company, Toppmeyer Research, with his mother.
His parents, Robert and Mary Toppmeyer, preceded Robert in death. Robert is survived by his sister Deborah Toppmeyer (Robert Hilkert) and his two loving nephews, Gregory and Eric.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
