Obituary of Brenda Engel

Brenda Farr Engel, 59, died in her sleep Friday morning, December 21, 2012, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Arlington and Falls Church, Virginia, she lived in West Windsor, NJ for 31 years. Brenda was a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Virginia School of Law. In 1981, after practicing law for the Attorney General of Missouri for three years, she joined the law firm now known as Backes & Hill, currently located in Lawrenceville, NJ, where she was a partner. Brenda was a longtime member of the Princeton United Methodist Church, where for many years she was chairperson of the Board of Trustees. At various times, she served as a trustee of Woodchuck Hollow, Cherry Hill, and Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church Cooperative nursery schools. She also provided many years of service to West Windsor-Plainsboro school district PTAs. Brenda was an early and longtime member of the West Windsor Arts Council, where until recently she served as Secretary of the Board. Daughter of the late Roy Farr, Brenda is survived by her mother, Betty (Hall) Farr of Reston, VA. She is also survived by her husband of 35 years, Richard Engel, of West Windsor, NJ, and their three children, John and his wife Megan, of Washington D.C., Robert and his fiancée Abigail Kamens, of Boston, MA, and Libby of New York, NY. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs, Ben and Nugget. Calling hours will be held Sunday, December 23rd, 3-6 p.m., at Mather Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton, NJ. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 24th, 11 a.m., at Princeton United Methodist Church, 7 Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton, NJ. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Princeton United Methodist Church or Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065.
