Obituary of Edward Chittenden III

MONTGOMERY Edward Augustus Chittenden (III) (Ted) 82, passed away at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City on December 22nd. Born in New Haven, CT he was the son of Edward A. Chittenden II and Francis Dowd Chittenden. He graduated from Yale University and after serving in the Army during the Korean War went on to earn a PHD from Columbia University. In 1959 he married Diana Borgers Chittenden and they were married for 43 years until her death in 2002. In 1968 he moved to Princeton N.J. and began a long career at Educational Testing Service in Princeton N.J., serving for many years as the Director of the Early Childhood Education Research group. While at ETS he and his colleagues authored many papers and several books on early childhood education. Ted was a founding member of the North Dakota Study Group which brought educators from across the country together. Following retirement from ETS Ted pursued his interests in nature, particularly birding, gardening and travel. He volunteered with the Museum of Natural History in New York serving as a Research and Assessment Advisor to the Science and Nature program for over ten years. Edward is survived by two sons, Douglas and Thomas, Daughter In-Laws, Kathy and Anu, five grandchildren and his brother Curtis and Sister In-Law Anne and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is scheduled for January 5th at noon at the Nassau Inn in Princeton. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that memorial contributions be made to the Audubon Society of New Jersey or to the Museum of Natural History Science and Nature Education Program.
