Obituary of James Greschak

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James Michael Greschak, 70, of West Windsor, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 2nd, 2021.

James was born in Trenton, NJ on September 24th, 1950, then moved to West Windsor with his family as a child. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1968, then received an associate degree in Fire Science from Mercer County Community College. Jim spent a multifaceted career dedicated to the fire service and promoting fire safety. He joined the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Company in 1970, eventually serving as Captain for a time, and stayed closely involved for over 50 years, until his death. In 1977 Jim began employment with the state of New Jersey as a Fire Inspector, then retired in 2010 as the State Fire Official. In 1983, James was appointed the second assistant Fire Marshal of Mercer County, then became the first assistant Fire Marshal in 1992, and served as Chief Fire Marshal of Mercer County from 2015 until his death.

James also served his community through myriad committees, associations, and programs. He was a charter member of the Twin W Volunteer First Aid Squad, a founding member of the Mercer County Fire Protection and Prevention Association, and more recently, closely involved with the development of the Youth Fire Setters and Fire Safety for Older Adults programs. He served as president of the State Association of County Fire Marshals, secretary of the West Windsor Township Firemen’s Relief association, was a life member of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Relief Association, and a member of the Mercer County Chief’s Association.

James was also very involved with his church, serving as Eucharistic Minister, volunteering as a teacher in the Parish Religious Education Program, and was a Knight of the 4th Degree with the Knights of Columbus.

Even with all this, Jim still made time for his favorite activities. He loved to go skiing, hunting, and deep sea fishing, and enjoyed watching stock car races at local race tracks. He also enjoyed traveling and collecting friends everywhere he went. Most of all, Jim enjoyed his friends and family. He was a kind, loving, generous soul who left a permanent mark on all who met him. To know him was to love him. He was a loving son, brother, and father, a silly, doting grandfather, and a one of a kind friend.

James is survived by his parents, Michael and Ruth Greschak, his sisters, Joanne Glover (Richard) and Janet Ferguson (Dave), his daughters, Jodi Greschak and Brittany Smith (Andrew), his granddaughters, Adaleigh Smith and Abigail Smith, his nephews, Ryan Glover and Eric Glover (Jessica), and his nieces, Lindsey Ferguson, Kristen Weston (Allen), and Caitlin Ferguson.

Visitation will be held at St. David the King Church in West Windsor on Friday, May 7th from 4pm-8pm, with a firemen’s prayer service starting at 7pm.

A funeral mass at St David’s will be held Saturday, May 8th at 12:30, followed by interment at the Dutch Neck Presbyterian Cemetery. (There is a prior engagement at the church, so please do not arrive too early)

A “Remember Party” (reception) will follow the burial across the street at West Windsor Volunteer Fire Company. Space may be limited, depending on weather.
