Obituary of William Joseph Burke
William Joseph Burke, 84, of West Windsor, passed away on September 1, 2022. He was born in Boston MA, oldest child of William Joseph and Mary (Barry) Burke, and grew up in Mattapan, MA. He graduated Boston College High School in 1955, Boston College in 1959 where he received his BS in Physics. He studied at Tufts University where he received his MS and PhD in Physics, and held a Post Doctoral Fellowship at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
Bill met his bride Mary (Murphy) at the Boston Public Library as a teenager where they both worked and married in 1960. They moved to West Windsor NJ in 1967 and loved it so much they never left. Bill spent his career at RCA’s David Sarnoff Research Center (later Sarnoff) in Princeton, NJ first as a physicist where he was awarded numerous patents and later as a Patent Attorney. He received his JD at New York Law School having attended at night while continuing to work at Sarnoff full time.
After retiring, Bill remained active with many friends and family. He was actively involved in several committees at Village Grande in West Windsor and loved spending time with his numerous grandchildren cheering them on from the sidelines at many soccer, basketball, football and baseball games and dance recitals. Bill loved to travel and spent many vacations visiting national parks throughout the US, as well as sightseeing throughout Canada, Europe and Africa.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Mary, children William (Phyllis), Kathleen (Bruno), Theresa (Tony), and Michael (Mariana), 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, sisters Mary Pierce of Cumberland, RI, Margaret Lee and her husband Christopher of Holliston, MA, sisters-in-law Frances Burke of Naples, FL and Marie Burke of Billerica, MA, and brother-in-law, Msgr. Frederick J. Murphy of Danvers, MA. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard and Edmund Burke.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, 40 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton, NJ 08542. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at St. David the King Church, 1 New Village Rd., Princeton Junction, NJ 08550.
