Obituary of Barbara Jean Black

Barbara Jean Hand Black, 76 years (died June 4, 2015) Barbara J. Black, a resident of Princeton, NJ, died on the afternoon of June 4, 2015 in the company of her family. Barbara was known for her strength, her perseverance, and her positive outlook in any circumstance. Born in Louisville, KY, Barbara was the eldest child of James J. Hand and Agnes Mae Emery Hand. She graduated from Presentation Academy in Louisville, KY and earned a scholarship to study chemistry at Bellarmine University. While visiting her family in Grand Rapids, MI, she met her future husband and left school to start her family. Barbara wed John William Black in 1958 in Grand Rapids. Their sons Donald Michael and Daniel Stephen were born in 1959 in Grand Rapids, and David William in 1960 in Houston, TX. The family lived in Brighton, MI for many years, and Barbara started a long career at the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Working for over 30 years, she rose from secretary to head administrator. She loved attending U of M football games with her sons, the vibrant academic life on campus, and attending horse racing whenever possible. She retired due to health issues and enjoyed gardening at her home. In 2008 she moved to Princeton, and cherished new friendships and experiences. She loved crossword puzzles and her week was not complete without finishing the New York Times Sunday puzzles. Her father James J. Hand and her sister Anita predecease Barbara. She is survived by her mother Agnes of Apple Valley, MN; her brother James of Alpharetta, GA; and her sisters Laurana (Glenn) Hanson of Princeton, MN and Colette (Michael) Howard, of Hudson, WI and brother Kevin of Farmington, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her son Donald of Princeton, NJ, his wife, Shari and their sons Ryan, Tyler and Ethan; her son Stephen of Bloomfield Hills, MI, his wife Debra and sons Mitchell and Jarrett; and her son David of Madison, WI, his wife Kimberly and daughters Paige and Sydney; all of whom made her immensely proud. Barbara also leaves behind her constant companion in her final years, her beloved cat Sam. Memorials in her honor will be held in Princeton, NJ and Apple Valley, MN. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, can be sent to Presentation Academy of Louisville, KY.
