Obituary of Vivian Towner

Vivian Lucille Swanson Towner passed peacefully into the loving arms of her dear Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 30th, 2011, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She would have celebrated her 88th birthday in August. She was the daughter of the late George and Irene Palmer Swanson and spent her early years growing up in Hornell, NY with her older sister, Ruth Swanson (Hammond), who now lives in Mt. Morris, NY. One of the things Vivian most enjoyed reminiscing about was singing in a trio on the radio and at various community functions during her teen years. Upon graduation from Hornell High School, Hornell, NY, she enlisted in the Navy. It was obvious if you spent any time with Vivian that she was extremely proud of her time serving her country during WWII as a Wave. She had her training in Iowa, was stationed in NYC and received an honorable discharge as Yeoman 1st Class. In 1947, she met and married Herbert L Towner of Avoca, NY, (predeceased 1989). She resided in Avoca until 4 years ago when she was welcomed into the home of her daughter, Charlotte, and son-in-law, Ron, in NJ. Vivian was well known and respected in her community for her work ethic, commitment to excellence and longevity in the secretarial field. Some of her employment included the Erie Railroad, Bud Arnold's Insurance, Avoca, NY, and secretarial assistant to the principal at Avoca Central School. Finally, she retired at the age of 60 after 20 years as secretary to the head of the Bath VA Domiciliary. Without a doubt, anyone who got to know Vivian soon discovered her love of chocolate, good food, watching birds in the backyard and delight in the beauty of God's creation. She also had a good sense of humor that often took people by surprise. Later in life, she attended Avoca Baptist Church and then Windsor Chapel (West Windsor, NJ) after moving to New Jersey. She always looked forward to Sundays. Vivian is survived by her three children: Alan L Towner and his wife, Lek, of Rome NY, Charlotte Bystrom and her husband, Ron, of NJ, and Daniel L. Towner and his wife, Marsha, of Avoca, NY. She has eight grandchildren: Wichai Towner (FL), Brenda Towner (NY), Michelle Gilbarte and her husband, Kevin (VA), Jennifer Thomson and her husband, Scott (CT), Kristi Pankratz and her husband, Seth (FL), Bryan Towner (predeceased 1984), Matthew Towner and his wife, Juliet (NY),and Tom Towner (NY); There are 10 great-grandchildren: Alex Dianna and Kyli Towner, Nathan, Justin, Kevin, Ryan, Emily, and Quintin Gilbarte, Joshua and Andrew Pankratz. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, August 2, from 7:30-8:15 p.m. at Windsor Chapel, 401 Village Rd. East, Princeton Jct. Family will be receiving friends from 7-7:30 and following the service.
