Frederick Newcombe Alyea, 79, of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania and Brant Beach, New Jersey passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on September 22, 2015.
Born in Glen Ridge, NJ on October 3, 1935 to Dr. and Mrs Hubert Alyea of Princeton, Fred was raised in Princeton, NJ. For primary and secondary school, he attended Princeton public schools, the Punahou School in Hawaii and graduated from Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. He received a degree in Chemistry from Princeton University in 1957 and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in California in 1962. Fred worked as a research scientist in General Electric's Space Division from 1965 until his retirement in 1992. Following retirement, Fred worked as a consultant in chemical and aerospace engineering. He resided in Bala Cynwyd, PA and surrounding areas for over 50 years, and throughout his life, he spent his summers in Brant Beach, NJ. Fred was known for his intelligence, humor and kindness.
Fred was a member of the Nassau Club in Princeton, NJ the Brant Beach Yacht Club and Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing, sailing, reading, cooking, spending time with his family and traveling. Fred is survived by his wife of 52 years, Retha Alyea, his daughter Sara Alyea, son in law TJ Anderson and his grandchildren, Ethan, Caroline and Lindsey Anderson. Funeral services will be private.
